ESM Graduate Scholarships

Each fall ESM awards three scholarships to current ESM graduate students.

Nominations will be requested from the faculty. Each scholarship will have a onetime monetary award (amount will be determined at the time of the award).

Daniel Frederick Scholarship

To be eligible, doctoral students should have completed all their course work, passed all qualifying and preliminary examinations, have had their dissertation proposal approved and accepted by their committee, and be in good standing with the Graduate School. Financial need is not a criterion in awarding the scholarship. The ESM Department Head along with the assistance of the ESM Graduate Committee shall then determine the outstanding doctoral student based upon academic record, creativity in research, performance on doctoral exams, and other appropriate doctoral student measures. Race, sex, age, handicap, veteran status, national origin, religion, political affiliation, etc., are not to be used as factors in selecting the outstanding doctoral student.

Manuel Stein Scholarship

The Manual Stein Scholarship should be awarded to an outstanding student pursuing graduate studies in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics. The criteria to be used are those well-reflected in Dr. Stein's own lifetime of service to his profession and commitment to his colleagues and students: the potential for scholarly achievement in teaching and research, and a demonstrated dedication to the welfare and well-being of others.

The Amir Chand and Dewki Bai Batra Scholarship

To be eligible, doctoral students should have completed all their course work, passed all qualifying and preliminary examinations, have had their dissertation proposal approved and accepted by their committee, have a GPA of 3.75 or above, and be in good standing with the Graduate School. The scholarship will be awarded to a doctoral student who has an exemplary portfolio of publications and presentations at various national and international conferences, has mentored undergraduate students through lecturing and laboratory courses, and participated in the ESM Graduate Seminar. The student’s GPA, performance in the ESM preliminary examination and time to degree will also be considered in the evaluation process.

Liviu Librescu Memorial Scholarship

To be eligible the nominated students should have outstanding academic records and have demonstrated strong leadership potential and commitment to professional or community service. It is expected that the scholarship will provide a stipend in the amount of about $5,000 per student to supplement a half-time Graduate Research or Teaching Assistantship for one semester. Up to two scholarships per academic year could be awarded to students of exceptional caliber and who have demonstrated a high level of research potential.
