BLACKSBURG, Va., Feb. 29, 2012 – I am pleased to convey that ESM alumnus Dr. Ganesh Balasubramanian has received an Honorable Mention in the Virginia Tech Outstanding Dissertation 2011 competition. His dissertation, “Modeling nanoscale transport phenomena: Implications for the continuum” was selected in the Engineering, Science, Mathematics and Technology category. Based on his dissertation, he published ten articles in peer-reviewed archival journals.
Dr. Balasubramanian was recognized as the 2011 Virginia Tech Graduate Man of the Year. He was inducted in the national honor society Alpha Epsilon Lambda for his academic and leadership qualities, and served as the President of its Alpha Xi chapter at Virginia Tech. He was awarded the 2009-2010 Liviu Librescu Memorial Scholarship by ESM for his research and educational accomplishments.
In preparation for his thesis, Dr. Balasubramanian collaborated with students and faculty members from the Departments of Engineering Science and Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering Education as well as others nationally and internationally. His educational collaborations also yielded a nanotechnology module for freshmen that integrates research with learning.
Dr. Balasubramanian is currently a Postdoctoral Scientific Assistant in the department of Theoretical Physical Chemistry in the Technische Universitat Darmstadt in Germany
