Dr. Sungwan "Sunny" Jung joins ESM as assistant professor of fluid mechanics and dynamical systems

Dr. Sunghwan Jung

Dr. Sungwan "Sunny" Jung will join ESM this coming Fall semester as an assistant professor of fluid mechanics and dynamical systems. Dr. Jung is an instructor at the Massachussets Institute of Technology, prior to which he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University. He received a doctoral degree in physics from the University of Texas in 2005 where he was also awarded the Outstanding Physics Dissertation Award. He has a 2001 M.S. degree in physics from Pohang University of Science and Technology and a 1999 B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Sogang University.

Dr. Jung is interested in problems of biofluid mechanics related to nonlinear interactions between soft bodies and their surrounding fluid, such as the behavior of a living organism like Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Other examples of his research include the dynamics of the capture threads of a spider's web that behave like wet and viscous damped springs, the self-assembly of small floating bodies such as mosquito eggs, learning how cats drink to design better microfluidic systems, and the interactions of flexible bodies such as fish and birds with their surrounding flows.

In ESM, he will be part of our growing bionspiration and biomimetic research group that seeks more robust and organic solutions to engineering design problems. Dr. Jung's research has been published in high impact journals such as Physical Review Letters, Physical Review E, Physics of Fluids, and Journal of Fluid Mechanics. He has won the Gallery of Fluid Motion competition three times at the annual meetings of the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics.

ESM is very proud of the high scholarship that it facilitates and of its interdisciplinary research at the interface of the physical and life sciences. His hiring reflects the careful consideration given to faculty hiring by our search committees and faculty members. We strive for excellence.
