Darrell Link Receives the COE Exemplary Employee Award
by Anne-Marie Bracken
On Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the CASE luncheon, Dean Richard Benson presented a plaque to Darrell Link, ESM's Laboratory Instrument Maker, for the College of Engineering Exemplary Employee Award. Dean Benson noted that Mr. Link is a quiet force (an "unsung hero") working behind the scenes, in the machine shop in Norris Hall. His 32 years of experience as a machinist, including nine years with ESM, has enabled him to demonstrate his knowledge and skill building fixtures and tooling with high accuracy.
Students in ESM, as well as other engineering departments, have benefited from Mr. Link's expertise as he has helped them refine their machine designs and turn them into a reality. Mr. Link's easy going personality has earned him the admiration of the many faculty, staff and students who interact with him. He's always willing to help in any situation, whether the request is within his normal scope of work or otherwise.
During the past year when his supervisor was on extended medical leave, Mr. Link assumed the role of shop supervisor, a role he was hesitant to assume. During this time he demonstrated his leadership skills and the shop continued its reputation for excellent service. ESM is fortunate to have such an exemplary employee and proud of Mr. Link and his commitment to ut prosim.
