ESM Laboratory Manager Danny Reed Recognized with Outstanding Performance in a Lab Award

by Scott Case, Professor and Associate Department Head

Mr. Danny Reed

Daniel (Danny) Reed is the winner of the 2009 Outstanding Performance in a Lab Award and will be presented his award tomorrow (October 14, 2009) morning at the Lab Employee Professional Network (LEPN) Exhibits and Workshops event at The Inn at Virginia Tech. This award is co-sponsored by Human Resources, University Organizational and Professional Development, and the Office of the Vice President for Research. The objective of this award is to recognize an individual or team (3 or more members) for performance supporting research and teaching labs in a non-administrative position. Outstanding Performance in Labs, for the purposes of this program, is defined as exemplary accomplishments, professional development and any relevant background and experience demonstrating how the individual or team interacts with colleagues and students.

ESM/MSE Professor Norman Dowling supported Danny's nomination for this award. He indicates "Danny had always done a conscientious job in his work. But he responded to the challenges faced by the ESM teaching laboratories in the summer of 2007 in a most energetic and outstanding manner. In particular, he assumed considerable additional responsibility and independence in his work for the ESM 3064 materials testing lab course... Danny took care of much of the detail of overcoming the disruption that had occurred and assuring that this course would be ready to go in the fall. Moreover, he has continued at this enhanced level of responsibility and independence since that time, efficiently handling the complex activities for ESM 3064 of assuring that an array of test samples are ready in time, that equipment works properly, and that instructors are trained to run the equipment. Also, he is fully engaged while the labs are in session, aiding instructors and students with details and with any problems that arise, as well as working directly with the students in the lab along with the instructors."

Dowling further indicated "Danny also facilitates student project and research activity in the ESM materials testing laboratories, patiently training and aiding these additional users from ESM and other departments. Further, he keeps track of the ESM equipment inventory, which is no small job, due to the large amount of teaching and research laboratory activity in ESM."
