Employment Opportunities for ESM Grads

Almost every major employer of engineers seeks graduates of engineering science and mechanics. Industrial and governmental organizations representing fields such as aerospace, nuclear energy, electrical, chemical, mechanical, structural, food, automotive, computer, communications, electronics, instrumentation, insurance, shipbuilding, textiles, biomedical, sales, and materials have appeared on campus to interview ESM students. Examples are (to name a few):

NASA
Babcock and Wilcox
Dominion Virginia Power
Shell Oil Company
Pratt and Whitney
Northrop Grumman Newport News
Food and Drug Administration
General Motors
AT&T
Western Electric (Lucent Technologies)
Vishay Micro-Measurements
Industrial Risk Insurers
Office of Naval Research
Celanese Fibers
Miami Heart Institute
Alcoa

Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum, the employment opportunities of the ESM graduates are broad. Graduates can enter the research, development, or design areas of engineering. The average starting salary of the B.S. graduate is competitive with the average salaries for all engineering disciplines. In recent years, approximately 40 percent of the B.S. graduates have entered graduate school directly upon graduation.

The employment outlook for ESM graduates continues to be strong. ESM graduates have studied a curriculum with breadth and variety of courses, which makes him/her attractive to many employers.
