Continuing Education Short Courses Organized and Taught:

Taught a summer short course with Dr. Daniel J. Schneck for Engineers in the Life Science Industry who need some specific training in Biomedical Engineering. Title: Physiologic Systems for Engineers; Dates: August 19-24, 1984, August 21-26, 1983; and August 22-27, 1982

Teaching and Participation:

American Chemical Society short course on High Performance Polymeric Adhesives and Composites, Lecture on Adhesive Mechanics. September, 1992.

Presented the two lectures for Statics (2 hours each) for the nationally televised, interactive review course for EIT test (Engineers in Training). Organized and wrote a complete set of notes on Statics for this program, including example problems. The course was presented live and interactive twice. The video tapes from these original two sessions were edited and are now utilized to run the course every winter. The original notes from this class are still distributed as part of the course offering. Dr. Grant continues to receive questions by telephone from people who are taking the course as a continuing education effort

Made a presentation at “First Conference on the Development of Technology in Medicine for Virginia,” June 11, 1987, Jordan Hall Conference Center, University of Virginia. Sponsored by CIT, VA Tech and UVA.

Made presentation at the SRC review for its sponsoring agency, US Navy, Surface Weapons Center, Dahlgren, VA. Talk presented Biomedical Engineering at VT and across VA, and included a review of work done for NAMRL through SRC/NSWC on Modeling Vestibular Response and Laboratory Experiments.

Made a presentation about the Center for Biomedical Engineering in the COE at the “Second Conference on Technology in Medicine in Virginia,” November 1 and 2, 1999, Omni Hotel, Charlottesville, VA. Sponsored by CIT, VCU, UVA, and VA Tech. Conference was centered on Biomedical Engineering in Virginia and Collaborations between Industry and Universities.

Arranged and hosted a visit by Dr. Peter Katona, President of the Whitaker Foundation regarding foundation support for our Biomedical Engineering Center and Program. July 1999.

Made a presentation to, and hosted, Wendy Bladwin, Director of Extramural Funding at the National Institute of Health, regarding our Center for Biomedical Engineering, November 1999.

Library Faculty Association. Talk on Biomedical Engineering in the COE. November 1999.

Center for Biomedical Engineering. Talk on Vestibular Mechanics and Hair Cell Transduction. January 2000.

Helped organize the Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference held in April, at the CEC, VA Tech. Served as judge for the student poster competition.

Reviewed proposals for the US Navy Aerospace Medical Command for Tactile Stimulators.
