The primary focus of research conducted in the Granata Lab is injury prevention. Most of our projects are related to balance and fall prevention, but we've dabbled in other areas too. Here are a few examples of studies we've completed.

 

Sensitivity of strains in the proximal femur to variations in muscle forces. Journal of Biomechanics (in preparation)

The goal of this study was to investigate how muscle forces contribute to strains in the proximal femur. This information can help us understand the role that muscle forces have in the strength of the proximal femur. Results indicate that strains in the femoral neck were affected by several muscles, and particularly the hip abductors. Understanding the importance of various muscles to strains in the proximal femur may aid in future efforts to understand and prevent hip fractures among older adults.

Practicing recovery from a simulated trip improves recovery kinematics after an actual trip. Gait Posture 26(2), 2007: 208-213

The goal of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a fall prevention intervention for adults over the age of 65. Results showed that practicing recovery from a simulated trip on a modified treadmill can improve the ability to recovery from an actual trip. Based upon these results, the idea of "practice makes perfect" may be able to help prevent falls among older adults.

Females exhibit shorter paraspinal reflex latencies than males in response to sudden trunk flexion perturbations. Clinical Biomechanics 25(6), 2010: 541-545.

The goal of this study was to investigate gender differences in paraspinal reflex delay as a factor that might contribute to gender differences in low back pain. Results showed among subjects without low back pain, females exhibited shorter reflex latencies than males.

Analysis of the ability of catcher's masks to attenuate head accelerations upon impact with a baseball. Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine 20(6): 422-427, November 2010

The goal of this study was to investigate how well catcher's masks help to prevent concussions by attenuating head accelerations upon impact with a baseball. Results showed that catcher's masks attenuated peak head accelerations ~85%.

Dr. Michael L. Madigan promoted to the rank of Associate Professor

ESM is pleased to report that Dr. Michael L. Madigan has been promoted to the rank of associate professor effective August 10, 2007 by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors. Dr. Madigan is a recognized leader in the fields of human movement dynamics, motor control of human movement, biomechanical modeling, and the mechanics of human physiology. We are very proud of what Dr. Madigan has achieved and believe that his promotion offers testimony to the strong tradition of scholarship within ESM.
