Congratulations to J. Alec Calhoun on his graduation! Alec has joined Caterpillar Inc. as an Associate Engineer in Peoria, IL.
"Stirring with ghost rods in counter-rotating flows" has been accepted as a lecture at the 22nd International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM2008) in Adelaide, Australia, August 24-30, 2008.
"On the statics and dynamics of point vortices in periodic domains" has been invited as a lecture at the IUTAM Symposium "150 Years of Vortex Dynamics" hosted by the Technical University of Denmark October 12-16, 2008.
Presentations to celebrate ESM centennial: "Chaotic advection in pulsed source-sink systems", with Pankaj Kumar, and "Topological fluid mechanics of stirring", with Jie Chen, will be presented at The Mechanics Conference to Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of ESM, May 29-30, 2008, at Virginia Tech.
Alireza Salmanzadeh, a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the ESM department, has joined my research group. Mr. Salmanzadeh received an M.S. degree in aerospace engineering from Sharif University of Technology in February 2007.
Congratulations to Jie Chen for passing his Ph.D. thesis proposal examination! His talk was titled "Topological chaos and mixing in lid-driven cavities and rectangular channels".
W. Taylor Walsh, a junior ESM student, has joined my research group. He will be working with Kellen Shain on experimental analysis of mixing in viscous flows.

The project "Glass Extrusion Process Analysis and Optimization Research", with Ron Moffitt (PI, IALR) and Gary Pickrell (MSE), has been funded by the Center for Innovative Technology through the Virginia Commonwealth Technology Research Fund.

December 19. "Case study on the pedagogical impact
of tablet PCs as a presentation medium in engineering classrooms", with Greg Walker, Jeff Johnston, Derek Bruff and Sean Brophy, has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Engineering Education.
November 2. There will be 19 talks presented at the 2007 Fall Fluid Mechanics Symposium in 190 Holden Hall on Nov 9; the schedule of talks is now available.
October 19. Mohsen Gheisarieha, a new Graduate Teaching Assistant in the ESM department, has joined my research group. Mr. Gheisarieha received an M.S. degree in applied mechanics from Sharif University of Technology in January 2007.

July 27. "Generating topological chaos in a lid-driven cavity flow", by Stremler and Chen, is scheduled to appear in Physics of Fluids vol. 19 no. 8. October 5. This paper is now expected to be in issue 10.

July 14-20. Participated in the 6th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics in Zurich, Switzerland. July 17. Presented "Point vortex models of bluff body wakes" as a part of the session of vortex dynamics. July 19. Presented "Chaos, mixing, and DNA analysis in pulsed source-sink systems" as part of the session on fluid mixing.
July 10-14. Visited J.-L. Thiffeault at Imperial College London to discuss mutual interests in topological fluid mechanics. Thanks jL, you were a great host!
May 31. The mini-symposium "Topology and Mixing in Fluids", co-organized with J.-L. Thiffeault, was held at the SIAM Snowbird meeting. Invited participants included Matt Finn, Tsuyoshi Kobayashi, and Kai de Lange Kristiansen.

Nov 30. Carrie Reinholtz submitted her M.S. thesis to the Graduate School at Vanderbilt University.
Nov 20. Jie Chen presented "Topological chaos in cavities and channels" at the 59th Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics.
Oct 3. Pankaj Kumar has joined my research group as a Ph.D. student. He comes to Virginia Tech from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he received the M.S. degree in mechanical engineering under the direction of Professor Agrawal.
Sept 15. NSF awarded a 3 year grant to support the project "Collaborative Research: Topological Fluid Mechanics of Stirring", which I am working on in collaboration with Phil Boyland at the University of Florida.
Aug 10-20. Visited Morten Brøns at the Danish Technical University, and presented an invited talk on "Streamline Topology in Vortex Streets" at the Second International Symposium on Bifurcation and Instabilities in Fluid Dynamics.
Aug 10. I have moved to the Department of Enginering Science & Mechanics at Virginia Tech. Jie Chen and Sebastian Eluvathingal have transferred with me.
